June 27: Introductory Blog Entry
Introduce yourself, your major and your objectives for
taking the class
My name is Stephanie Robinson. I am 26 years old with a two year daughter, whom I love very much. I am starting a little late with furthering my education as I decided to travel after high school and spent 8 years in the US Army as a combat medic. I’ve been deployed to Iraq once, and I spent most of my time in MD. Currently, I work full-time at Oconee Medical Center in the ER, go to school full-time, and mother concurrently. I started school in Jan 2012 to major in Nursing. As of now, I am a Junior 2 with 3 semesters until completion of my degree. My objective for this course is to gain a multi-faceted insight into women that I could potentially use when interacting with my own female patients. In regards to my education and career, my long term goal is to obtain my Master’s degree in Nursing. I will use this degree to either become a nursing educator for the diabetic community or a Nurse Practitioner for Women’s Health. I believe that this course will help to build a solid foundation for my own personal body of knowledge about women should I decide to fully go in the direction of a women’s health practitioner. Having an understanding of the potential social and psychological issues (just to name a few) that influence the livelihood of women could exponentially impact the overall effectiveness of how rapports are built with female patients in my profession and just being able to empower women in general.
ReplyDeleteMy name is Shantel Butler and I am 22 years old. I am a senior at Clemson University majoring in Electrical Engineering. I came into Clemson the fall of 2010 and have remained here ever since. I will be graduating in December 2014 with Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering and a Minor in Mathematical Science. Upon graduation, I plan to go to Tier 1 law school to obtain my JD, and later become a Patent and Trademark attorney with my own consulting firm. Growing up in a family full of women has really spiked my interest for this class. We all look, act, and behave differently, even though we come from the same background. An example of what I mean is my 13 year old sister and I. We look nothing alike, act nothing alike, and definitely, behave nothing alike, even though we have the same mother. She has an undying interest for clothing, hair, make-up and boys, and I'd rather read a book or learn about what happened this day in history! I looked the class up and read its course description, and knew right away that this class would cover some of my burning questions about why we do some of the things we do as women. I also like to mentor young women, especially in the African American community. I have been a mentor at Clemson for the last 3 years for young men and women in general engineering, as well as other majors. I took on the mentoring job to help reach out to the young adults who entered college and were blinded by the stereotypical ways of college students. I found joy in teaching and empowering women like myself, and I would like to be able to continue teaching and empowering these young women, with factual information gained in this course. I'm very excited about learning more about women, being that I am a woman, looking for growth.
ReplyDeleteIt's really commendable that you are mentoring young women and African American women at that. Being African Amercan myself, I know how some of the females in our culture are not the most receptive to another trying to share knowledge or help empower. These efforts are frequently misconstrued and made negative. It is awesome that you have overcome some of those barriers and are able to be successful at what you do. I really do hope that this course is everything you want it to be and that it may help you flourish in your mentoring.
DeleteThank you Ms. Robinson! I wish the same for you :)

ReplyDeleteHey everyone! My name is Hannah Shanor, and I am a senior at Clemson University. My major is history, and my minor is education. I am 22 years old, and have a 3-year-old dog that I adopted my sophomore year (hope that is not too weird to mention in my introduction). I am from Spartanburg, SC, but my parents moved to Charlotte (Mountain Island lake) 3 years ago so now I consider that home. Most weekends I am either on the lake or in Emerald Isle at the beach. When I graduate from Clemson I plan on becoming a high school history teacher. I have always wanted to teach. At first I thought I wanted to teach elementary level children, but after much consideration I felt that I would like the high school level much better. I think it will be more of a challenge, but I feel like it better suites me. I am the middle of 3 girls, (my poor father) so being surrounded by women I decided that this class would be appealing for me. I hope it will help understand women better, and hopefully help me with my career teaching adolescent girls. This class was also recommended for me to take, and I am excited to see the things I will learn during this summer course.
ReplyDeleteMy name is Nicole Trench but I usually go by Nikki. I am 20 years old and turning 21 very soon! I am from a small town, Woodruff in South Carolina, which is not too far from Clemson. I have three cats, although I do not consider myself a cat lady. Also, during the summer I work as a camp counselor in Greer at a day camp. Camp has been up and running for three weeks now and all of the kids are great! I am a junior and I'm majoring in Biological Sciences and minoring in psychology. After I graduate and get my bachelors degree in science, I plan to attend the Medical University of South Carolina in Charleston to become a Physical Therapist. My objective for taking this course is to expand my knowledge on women in general. Because I am a woman, I feel it is important to learn about our history and how we fought for women's rights. Feminism is very interesting to me and I cannot wait to learn more about it. I know that when the time comes, I want to marry someone who does not expect his wife to do all the cooking and cleaning and laundry and that he will be more up to date and want to help pitch in with all of the work. And lastly this course fills a requirement but I chose it over others because I felt it would be interesting and that I could learn a lot from it.
ReplyDeleteMy name is Jamie Woodruff. I am 21 years old and I am a junior. This past school year was my first year at Clemson. I went to USC Upstate in Spartanburg for two years and then decided to transfer here. I am from the small town of Woodruff, South Carolina. I have a Cocker Spaniel who is 6 years old. His name is Colby Jack (yes like the cheese). I am a nanny over the summer to two kids. They are 6 and 9. My major is Secondary Education with an emphasis on English. When I graduate from Clemson I plan on teaching high school english. I have always knew I wanted to be a teacher, but it wasn't until after I substituted for a while at a high school did I realize I wanted to teach at the high school level. My objective for taking this class is to learn more about women. Women's Studies is not a required course for my major. I chose to take this course just to learn more about women and I feel like this course will be beneficial to me since I will be teaching girls around the time when they are going through the change of becoming young women.
